I prefer the look of a dark mulch, so we tend to use dark organic mixes that will decompose in our flower beds and around our trees. Other possibilities are rocks, compost, bark, wood chips, landscape fabric, or recycled rubber tires. Double Shredded and made from all of the tree. Breaks down slower, is great for starting beds, under trees & bank/slope areas to prevent washing. BEST OPTION FOR WEED SUPRESSION. This will have larger sized pieces than Premium Bark & Dye Mulches.
PREMIUM MULCH: $35 / cubic yard ~ $4.99 / 2 cubic foot bag
Triple shredded and made from the bark of the trees. Breaks down faster (within 6-9 Months) but adds nutrients to the soil & creates a rich topsoil. This will be a softer & finer mulch. *IS NOT GREAT FOR WEED SUPPRESSION
BLACK DYED MULCH: $37 / cubic yard ~ $4.99 / 2 cubic foot bag
Triple shredded and made from all of the tree. Dyed with an organic, non-toxic, water-based colorant that is safe for children & pets. This dye is essentially food dye. This mulch is a larger cut than the Premium and will not break down as fast.
**POTENTIAL PROBLEM: 6-8 HOURS OF DRYING IN SUNSHINE BEFORE RAIN IS ENCOURAGED! It’s not uncommon to experience colorant (Dye) washing from the colored mulch, especially during periods of heavy rain. As with any other item that is being painted/dyed, it must have ample time to dry before it’s no longer vulnerable to color bleaching off during rainstorms.
MUSHROOM SOIL: $22 / cubic yard ~ $4.99 / 2 cubic foot bag
This helps build organic matter, use for gardens & beds to promote fertilization. Be careful what plants are put in it, as the PH can be too strong & can “burn” the roots. Mix with pre-existing soil.
